What to Do: Old as Funk

If Joe Wos is right, then I am, indeed, as old as Funk. Older, actually, since "Funky Turns 40" opens at the ToonSeum this week and is celebrating with a huge exhibit opening and par-tay following the Gallery Crawl on January 27th, and I turn 41 in mere weeks and it will largely be a non-event. So, to re-cap, Funky is younger, cooler and has more friends than I do.
Seriously, ToonSeum's latest exhibit, according to Wos, celebrates "the legacy of the first wave of positive Black animated characters of the 1970's." He adds, "Until the Civil Rights movement of the late 1950s and 60s, African-Americans were treated as second-class citizens. While prevalent in music and popular culture, Blacks still faced extreme political, economic, and social prejudices. In comics and animation, Blacks were largely ignored or were depicted in broad, derogatory stereotypes. But as laws and attitudes began to shift, the Saturday morning cartoons of the 1970s became a direct conduit of social change, introducing a host of new Black characters. For the first time, audiences were exposed to positive, relatable images of Black life through animated series like Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, The Jackson 5ive, Josie and the Pussycats, I Am The Greatest, The Harlem Globetrotters and Star Trek: The Animated Series."
Undoubtedly a reason to celebrate. "Funky Turns 40" is co-curated by Pamela Thomas of the Museum of Uncut Funk. The exhibit runs January 18th Through March 10th. The ToonSeum will open at 8pm on Saturday, January 27th for the event, which runs until 10:30. Tickets are $5 for ToonSeum members, $10 for non-members, and a special $50 Donor admission will get you a free gift! You can purchase tickets here. Attendees must be 21. Can't make the it? Casting Call: Want to Move to Paradise?

We've all done it. Traveled to an exotic locale on vacation, and pondered the "What-if's". "What if I never went home?", "What if I quit my job and lived here FOREVER?". Well, an upcoming reality show is putting those questions to the test, and a local casting director is looking to give the perfect Pittsburgher their 15 minutes (or more) of fame.
Here is what they told me.....(lazy cut and paste alert ahead):

Do you, like everyone else, know someone that has been saying that they're going to quit their job and move somewhere tropical? Or maybe they're tired of their life up north, in the snow, and yearn for California. Whatever their dream residence, a major cable network has an opportunity for them. We're casting a pilot that will give this "dreamer" a real look at their ideal locale, discuss the feasibility of actually quitting their job and living comfortably in a new environment. They WILL get to travel to their dream location to investigate realistically. At the conclusion of the episode, they'll have all the information needed to actually follow through on their claims -- or return to their life and job back home. The ideal candidate is 30+, has a job and family that will be impacted by their decision, and has a destination in mind (for the first episode, we're focusing on North America and the Caribbean). Candidates will be expected to film a short, 3-5 minute video of themselves answering a series of questions. 'Burgh Watching - MCG Jazz

Merry Christmas! - A Perfect Pierogi

Every year, little sis and I get together to whip up a few hundred or so of my families' traditional pierogi (pierogies?). I shared the recipe a few years back, but forgot to mention about that whole "1 Tbsp butter" thing that you need to add to the dough. VERY important...
Needless to say, we have refined our technique over the years. mostly thanks to this little guy:

It is very clearly named a "Tart Maker" (it is stamped right on the top), however, when Grams handed it down to me she called it a "Pierogi Punch", and since the darn thing is 2 generations older than I, who am I to tell it differently? Plus, it literally changed my life as far as annual pierogi making goes. I did find it for you, under the Antique Gadgets on Amazon. Merry Christmas! There is also this one, if you go for new-fangled stuff. Also, I added a Silpat Mat last year. Not quite as hard to find, and worth every penny.

Visit the orginal recipe here. As far as punching goes, these were our steps. It is entirely possible I am using this thing wrong, but since the instructions probably landed in the trash oh say, 50 years ago, I'm not stressing about it. Besides, our methods worked.

Step one: Use the circular edge to make a lovely, perfect circle.

Step two: Fill with a generous spoonful of filling.

Step three: Fold over and lightly press to seal

Step four: Lay punch over sealed pierogie, and press down firmly on the handle

and, Voila!

A Perfect Pierogi.

Behind the Scenes - 'Burgh Watching with MCG Jazz

We recently shot the fifth and final video in our series for the Manchester Bidwell Coporation. MCG Jazz is the (swinging) heartbeat of the organization, and this interview was quite enjoyable. My panel included Executive Producer of MCG Jazz Marty Ashby, Pittsburgh Jazz great Roger Humphries, MCG Jazz Board Member Tony Taccone, and Walt Straiton, Manager of Institutional Solutions at Yamaha. Room to Brew - East End Brewing Company

There is much anticipation buzzing around Pittsburgh's Social Media community for East End Brewing's pending expansion and move, which is expected to be completed sometime in Fall 2012. Of course, there is also the fact that their current location on Susquehanna Street is next door to Burgh Bees' Homewood Apiary, so it could be that......

I recently had the opportunity to meet with East End's owner and brewmaster Scott Smith and got a sneak peek of the new space. The operation is going from a tiny yet well-organized space of around 4000 square feet,

to an eye-popping 17,000 square feet at 6580 Frankstown Avenue, which is only a few blocks from the current location!

All in I spent close to an hour touring the facility with Scott, and discovered that the secret behind what makes East End's beer so good, is likely the passion Scott has for every aspect of the process, from construction to brewing. After all, most of the facility on Susquehanna he built on his own! Having an intimate knowledge of your working space is bound to produce a superior product, no?
There are some big plans to accompany the big move, most notably of which is the addition of a growler room, complete with walk-in cooler. Plus, some news is forthcoming about an additional tenant taking up residence in the customer area. Can you say one-stop-shop?
Of course, the heart of the building is where all the action takes place. The amount of equipment being unloaded into the new space has required the use of a forklift, and my only disappointment from this interview was that I didn't think to get any video footage of Scott driving it around. I was too in awe of the scale of their new operation. Take a look a the Brewhouse setup....

I have to shamefully admit, that if it weren't for the ToonSeum Gallery Opening, I would likely have missed Handmade Arcade: Handmade for the Holidays this year. Fortunately, I ran into some good friends outside of the ToonSeum who were just coming from the event, so I headed up the street to spend some dough and hunt for some more locally bought Christmas Gifts for the fam.
Honestly, the only thing that could have made this more awesomely perfect, would be another day. There were so many vendors participating that my head was spinning (hence the lack of photos). I could have spent a whole week there.
I ran across the booth of one of my favorite local artists, Andy Kehoe, who I have written about in the past during my coverage for the Black Forest book launch (along with an interview with another one of my favorite local talents, Mascha Vereschenko). Andy is exceptional, and so this gift is for someone exceptional in my life. I won't say who, because I don't want to ruin the surprise.....

Or is it GrAyskull? Lou would know and I wish I would have thought to ask him this past Saturday afternoon at the ToonSeum.
By Lou, I mean the great Lou Scheimer, one of the founders of Filmation and the producer of many of my childhood memories, He-Man included. The ToonSeum celebrated his many accomplishments during the grand opening of their newly expanded space, christened the Lou Scheimer Gallery. Lou was on hand, "He-Man" sword at the ready, to cut the ribbon and get the party started.

It was quite a party, and even though the ToonSeum has doubled in size, it was bursting at the seams that afternoon. Even Councilman Bill Peduto was on hand to throw some old-school governmental language at us and officially proclaim it Lou Scheimer day.

Also included in the new expansion, is the Hall Gallery (literally, in the hallway). It is currently featuring the work of Keith Haring (c'mon, if the Warhol can have a superhero exhibit.....)

Of course, the Looney Toons exhibit (sponsored by Acme Brick natch), is still running in the main gallery space through December 31st.
Another huge benefit of the expansion, is the acquisition of some much needed outdoor space, which on this gorgeous afternoon was decked out with a red carpet. I am excited to see the creative ways that Director Joe Wos will use this space!

It's around this time of year that family emails start to fly about who got what for who (whom?) this Christmas. I'm going to be the first to admit, that I am grotesquely lucky to be a part of a family who both wants to, and can afford to be this generous come holiday time. I count my blessings every day, and never take it for granted.
That being said, a girl gets a little stressed as the tally begins to pile up, and my Christmas present closet (Yes, I have one of those. Please don't judge) remains bare. This year not only have I gotten a head start, but I am also trying a little experiment; buying all gifts from locally owned shops. Yes, it's a little less convenient than whipping through the Amazon Wish Lists at the eleventh hour and taking advantage of free prime shipping, but it is an inconvenience that is far less than not being able to put any gifts under the tree at all.

My first stop was close to home, yet it was only the second time I had set foot inside the door. Shame on me. Penhollows is the perfect place for those stuck on the "impossible to buy for" people on their lists. I have a number of those. I won't name names (ahem, dad), but they are always the last ones checked off. How could you not find something in a store that looks like this!

Penhollows has definitely evolved over the course of its last four years on popular South Highland Avenue in Shadyside. Originally,their offerings leaned heavily toward books and vintage items sourced primarily from New England Auctions. Although both of those categories still have a heavy presence in the store, new items inspired by owner Roger's travels across the country (New York in particular) now round out the amazing selection. In addition to the Home Store, Penhollows also operates a Design Center next door, open Tuesday-Thursday and by appointment. Adding to the atmosphere, their current Art Show features the work of Pittsburgh native Virgil Cantini, a prominent local artist who worked in a variety of mediums. A trunk show will be transitioning the store into the holidays. mmulberry Jewelry (designed by local artist Mary Navarro) opens this weekend with a reception on Friday 11/4 from 5-8PM, and carries on through Saturday 11/5 from 11-5PM, and Sunday 11/6 from 12-4PM. Select pieces from the collection will be available throughout the holidays. Of course, there are still those books.....

Now, lets get back to some shopping.

We just wrapped up shooting the next installment of our series on the Manchester Bidwell Corporation for 'Burgh Watching. I actually got to throw some pottery, and it didn't all end in tears thanks to the teaching skills of Dave Deily, Youth and Arts Program Director. Well, it ended in a lopsided dog dish actually. Step Up - Win a Free Ticket to This Weekend's Step Trek!

Every year, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association hosts the popular Step Trek. A vigorous historical walking tour navigating one of the Slopes most unique features; over 2700 steps that wind through the neighborhood. Now in its 11th year, the event features different routes, allowing the trekkers to customize the experience. The infamous "Black Route", the most breathtaking (literally) of the treks, has added a leg to its tour, taking the walker through a little known section of the Slopes called "the hollow". All of the routes provide the participant with the famous unobstructed views that many residents of the Slopes get to enjoy on a daily basis.

You can visit the SSSNA's website for more information and to purchase tickets for the event, or order t-shirts. Tickets this year are $9.99 in advance, and $15 the day of the event. Proceeds go to benefit the SSSNA, a volunteer organization devoted to maintaining and improving this unique neighborhood.

Oh wait, if you visit Facebook Page (and become a fan if you aren't already of course!), you will find instructions on how to get a code for a free ticket!! That's right folks......FREE!!!! Good CARMAA

People who love dogs have good karma. I must have excellent karma, since I like my dogs more than I like most people. Makes sense, right?

Seriously, the "CARMAA" in my title isn't a result of poor spelling skills after the hiatus, it actually stands for "Coalition to Adopt, Rehome, and Match Abandoned Animals". The name alone makes me tear up a little.
This Saturday, October 1st, CARMAA is putting on a celebration of all things Doggie at the Southside Works (in the parking lot next to McCormick and Schmick's). Last year, I volunteered at Dogtoberfest, and I am so happy to see it return this year. Although I am not able to volunteer, I will be there, doggies in tow (duh), to see all of the great stuff, and to try and convince the BF that another addition is a GREAT idea (don't you think?).

Yep, that's me at the CARMAA table last year. I bought most of what you see there (hey, it's a good cause!)

The good folks at CARMAA have an even bigger celebration planned this year. They are bringing back the popular "Ask the Vet" and "Ask the Trainer" stations, and of course there will be adoptable dogs from shelters and rescues across the area. If you are willing and able to offer a good "furever" home, make some time in your weekend for this. While you're there, you will be able to enjoy homemade ethnic food, training demonstrations, guest DJs and musical entertainment. Starting at 11am, a "Pooch Pride" parade is planned, and you and your furry friend can participate for a $5 entry fee. CARMAA has plans to award nearly $500 in prizes, so I am planning Billie's costume already....

"Wait, what?"

The festivities run through 4pm. Of course, proceeds go to further CARMAA's mission of acting as an "umbrella" organization to help all shelters across the area and educating the public about companion animals. Oops, another little tear.....

Night at the ToonSeum (X2)

The ToonSeum has a whole lot of awesome going on this weekend.

First, on Friday August 5th, they are hosting their 2nd annual "Bloggers' Blast". Open to members of the media and bloggers, this event was, well, a blast last time, and is something I am very excited to attend this weekend. At the last Bloggers' Blast, I got to meet this guy:

For those of you who don't recognize him, it's Doug Bradley, aka "Pinhead" from the Hellraiser movies. This encounter ranked pretty high on my geek-happiness scale, so I am anxious to see what ToonSeum founder and director Joe Wos has in store for us this time around. Of course, the big news in town is that we have been transformed into Gotham City for a few oh-too-short weeks. "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises" is filming here in the 'Burgh, and ToonSeum is (appropriately), getting in on the "action". First, they have extended their incredibly popular exhibit "Superheros: Icons and Origins" through August 21st in honor of us having our very own (albeit temporary) superhero. If you haven't been down to check it out, I highly recommend you do so. In addition, on Saturday the ToonSeum will have some special "late knight" extended hours. Who knows who may pop in after the cast and crew wrap up their shoot in Downtown Pittsburgh that evening? Perhaps we should point the bat signal above the ToonSeum to get their attention?

Can't Stop the Serenity

Personally, I think that Joss Whedon's "Firefly" series was the best thing to ever grace the small screen, and the fact that it was prematurely ripped from the airwaves is one of the greatest tragedies of our generation.

Now that I have that off of my chest, I am very excited to let you all in on a great charity event coming to Pittsburgh on July 8th. Now in its sixth year, "Can't Stop the Serenity" is a worldwide event that organizes screenings of Whedon's "Serenity" (the feature film that wrapped up the "Firefly"story line) to benefit "Equality Now", a charity that works for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world.

The Pittsburgh Event is being held on July 8th, at the Orpheus Singing Society (6301 Butler Street, Pittsburgh) beginning at 5:00 p.m. In addition to the screening, there will also be raffles, activities (Nerf Gun Shooting Range!), and a vendor marketplace.

Happy Fourth of July from the "Fireworks Capital of the World"

Pyrotecnico and the EQT Three Rivers Regatta will wrap up the Fourth of July Holiday with, er, a BANG! Well, a lot of bangs actually.
Pyrotecnico is a New-Castle based family owned company, and they were recently selected to be the official fireworks provider for the Three Rivers Regatta. From the sounds of it, they are planning a pretty spectacular show that includes "precisely scripted choreography with a specially selected soundtrack". This is the second time the Regatta has selected Pyrotecnico to put together their flashy show, They also provided sky entertainment for the 2009 Regatta.
“We are thrilled to once again be part of our hometown Pittsburgh’s Fourth of July celebration,” said Pyrotecnico President and CEO Stephen Vitale. “I’ve been all over this country, and never have I been to a place where fireworks are so ingrained into the culture as much as in Pittsburgh. It’s an honor to be able to showcase our expertise in front of such a big fireworks community. This city means so much to us – we really enjoy doing work here.”

Amen to that!

Better 'Burgh Living: Getting Lost in the Moment, Literally

A "Twisted Tree" in the heart of Frick Park

When Emily suggested a hike for the "exercise" portion of our project, I thought she was spot-on. It was the perfect "I'm-exercising-but-not-really" way to trick my body into actually doing something that was good for it. I've always been partial to Frick Park. Back in my early years in Pittsburgh, I lived in Regent Square, and loved the proximity to nature that the park provided. Over the course of my years in the 'Burgh however, my trips to the park became fewer and farther between, and then pretty much became nil as I moved to the far away land of Shadyside. (pathetic - no?)

It was a perfect day as we set out on our adventure; sunny and in the 70's. We started with a brisk pace and an optimistic outlook. Emily let me make most of the navigational decisions, which we soon realized was probably a grave error, since not only did I seem to have a knack for finding an uphill path every time, but we were very quickly and decidedly lost within about 15 minutes. We didn't mind too awfully much though, since as we moved deeper into the park, we saw some pretty incredible moments of nature like the "twisted tree" above, which gave Emily chills, and this...

So, although we were definitely lost for a good portion of the hike, we didn't really mind since we were enjoying all there was to see. After a while however, Emily pulled out her phone's navigation program, and we wound our way slowly back out of the park. Since we were so close, I couldn't resist stops at two of my favorite places in Regent Square that I wanted to share with Emily. Our first stop, Animal Nature to buy some treats for our pups, and then Rose's Ice Cream, to buy some treats for me!

We Can Be Heroes, For Just Saturday

Grab your capes and head to the streets of Downtown Pittsburgh this Saturday as the ToonSeum and Bricolage Theater celebrate with the Downtown Heroes Block Party. I will be missing the festivities since we (and perhaps some furries as well what with Anthrocon being in town this weekend and all) have a very special wedding to celebrate (congrats Christian and Jen!). But you? You have no excuse......

Parents and kids aged 6-12 will enjoy a host of activities, including a Superman sound effects workshop, make-your-own superhero costumes, outdoor jazz, free comic books, and a special matinee performance of Midnight Radio: Superhero Edition!

Other participating organizations include the August Wilson Center, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, and VisitPittsburgh.

All activities are located on the 900 block of Liberty Avenue downtown.

Comics for Comics III: Dan Piraro, Comedy and Bizarro at the Rex

This Thursday, the ToonSeum will host the third annual "Comics for Comics" event to benefit the museum, at the Rex Theater in the Southside. Dan Piraro, creator of the daily comic feature Bizarro will bring his biting comedy to the stage. The show promises to be as unpredictable and surreal as the panel itself, as Dan reminisces about his life as an artist, using a combination of stories, slides, and original music. In publication since 1985, Bizarro has won three consecutive "Best Cartoon Panel of the Year" awards from the National Cartoonists Society, and in 2010 won the most prestigious award given by the NCS, "Outstanding Comic of the Year". Currently, Dan is negotiating a half-hour animated comedy series for television. Get your TiVos ready!

The Black Forest Launch: An Interview with Local Artist Masha Vereshchenko

This Friday evening from 6-10pm, the Warhol will host Unicorn Mountain's launch of The Black Forest: A Collection of Art, Comics and Folk Tales from Western Pennsylvania and Beyond. Wait, did someone say comics? Even better, admission to the event is free, and will include some entertainment from all-star local DJ's Matt McDermott, Phil Boyd and Dave Wheeler.
The book features work from renowned indie-comic superstar Theo Ellsworth (Capacity), Frank Santoro (Storeyville, Cold Heat) and Rina Ayuyang (Whirlwind Wonderland). Also featured are a number of works by Unicorn Mountain favorites such as Kathleen Lolley, Ben Kehoe, Chris Cornwell, Bill Wehmann, Masha Vereshchenko, JuliACKS, Jenifer Cooney and many more. The anthology’s cover (below) is by local art sensation Andy Kehoe.

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Masha Vereshchenko about her collaboration with these artists, and about her life here in the 'Burgh. Masha's work is, in a word, amazing. In many words, it is breathtaking, whimsical, dark (in a delicious way), and captivating . Her answers to my questions were true to form.

Tell me a little about your background: . I was born in Russia, in the city of Ryazan. My whole family was artistically talented. My Mom liked to sew. She drew clothing designs for herself and then made them instead of buying expensive fashionable things. My Dad made carvings out of wood or foam of evil fairy tale characters. Owls, spiders, the Russian witch Baba Yaga, a three-headed dragon, the witch's house that has crow feet-- he would turn them into jewelry boxes and bird cages. My sister and I constantly fought over drawing supplies. I didn't fit in with other kids, so I would sit and paint things from cartoons for hours in my room.
My Mom had the dream of having a better life here in America and when I was 12, my Mom and I moved to Detroit. After I completed high school, I moved to Pittsburgh to go to college, but I didn't finish it. My major was all wrong for me; I just wanted to do my own thing. So I've stayed here for about 9 years now, doing various shows, and luckily got involved with UM.

How did you become involved in the Black Forest collaboration, and what’s it like working with such a large group of local artists?: I became involved with Unicorn Mountain's "The Black Forest" when I was part of a show in a Lawrenceville gallery. Curt Gettman, the father of Unicorn Mountain, came to the opening. I had been working on a little story in my sketch book, just for me. When Curt approached me and asked if I had any narrative type work, I happened to have just finished my story. It was as if we were psychically drawn toward each other.

Because of the book, I have met many talented Pittsburgh artists and had a few amazing opportunities to show my stuff.

What is your favorite “Pittsburgh Legend”?: I don't know about a legend, but I really love the story about the banana factory explosion in the strip. Oh, and Squonk, the ugly, stinky, shy animal. But I wouldn't say it's a legend ... I actually caught one of them once. I had him in my basement in a steel cage, but he ate though it and escaped. Of course, it was very dumb of me to use steel, he being a Pittsburgh native and all. But believe me or not, it happened! Oh-- he actually has a yellow tongue with black lines across it. Bet you didn't know that.

What surprises you the most about local response to your work, both with this project and with others?: I was recently sharing a table with UM and Jenifer Cooney at the Handmade Arcade. Honestly I didn't expect too much of a response. I spend so much time alone; I'm not quite sure what people think of my work. But lots of people stopped by to talk and see my art. I thought it was pretty incredible.

Tell me a little about some upcoming projects you have: I'm not sure what my future projects are. I don't look for projects; I think they find me. I find a new technique or paint, or some new tool, and accidentally mess something up-- which sometimes resolves in me finding a whole new direction, which then starts a new series. Right now I am working on a "Dangerous Animals" series, which depict babies in distress with a horse, giraffe, highland cow, spider prison, piranhas and bats, or an elephant crushing a girl.

What's next? I can't wait to find out.

What “inspires you” about Pittsburgh?: What inspires me about Pittsburgh is the landscapes. I live on the South Side and my deck faces the South Side slopes. I love looking at it. There's a church on the hill that looks like a giant with two yellow eyes and a pointy hat who sits there protecting me.

Whenever I want to start on a new piece, but feel stuck, I go for a drive around the city. I don't know if it's the nature or the creative energy drawn from other artists flying through the air, but it usually helps.

“Why Pittsburgh” for you? Why do you choose to live and work here in the city?: Pittsburgh has brought a comfortable and inspiring living environment and amazing friends for me who are like family. I also like that this city supports artists with lots of opportunities like Art All Night, Handmade Arcade, the Sprout Fund and things like that.
And Squonk: If you read this, I'm coming for you. I'll get you this time and I bet you can't eat through glass!

Better 'Burgh Living: Yay Greens! Wait, What?

This was the portion of mine and local Health Coach Emily Levenson's adventure that I was the most looking forward to. Changing the way I navigate a grocery store was probably the most crucial piece in my journey toward better heath. Firstly, I am a notorious "over-shopper". It's a solid case of my eyes being bigger than mine and the BF's stomachs combined. Emily picked up on this almost out of the gate, and she gently pulled on the reins while I marched gung-ho through the Market District in Shadyside. Secondly, I am certainly not adverse to trying new things, which has a good and a bad outcome. I usually dive into a project with such gusto, that I loose steam and interest pretty quickly. Emily was careful to point out all sorts of things I should be trying, but also kept the contents of the cart conservative (for me at least).

Our first stop was unexplored territory; an area that usually only sees my cart whizzing by as a blur as I head for the comfort of the sweeter realms. The Greens.

Emily had hinted early on that we were going to explore greens in great detail. Many of them are "super-foods", meaning they are packed with unexpected nutrients such as calcium and antioxidants. I mean, after all "Kale is the new lettuce". (You will get that if you are a fan of "Modern Family".) Also, part of my health rehabilitation is a cut-back on the dairy (sigh), so my intake of the dark leafy greens will supplement the loss of calcium from this department, and likely even overtake it. She demystified Bok choy, and revealed the secrets of Broccoli Rabe. In the end, we left with a healthy bunch of Kale (since I had already targeted a delicious recipe I wanted to try), and some watercress, which Emily pointed out is tasteless (as in "not tasting like anything". It actually is quite stylish amongst the greens as far as I am concerned).

Emily's tips:

Watercress makes a great addition to smoothies, which by the way have become a main staple of my new diet. It's a great way to add some nutrients, without adding any bitter taste.
Massage your Kale! Seriously, a little olive oil and sea salt rub will bring out the flavor.

Emily also shared a fantastic book with me, called "Greens Glorious Greens", which offers explanations and recipes from the mysterious land. It is getting quite a workout now that I am Emily-less at home with a fridge full of green stuff.

(PS. Wheat grass tastes like, well, grass. Use wisely)

Moving onward, we hit an area I am more familiar with. Let's call it "The flour alternative section". By now, most of you know I don't eat the gluten. So, I am an expert in finding ways around this. Quinoa is my friend. Here, Emily also suggested adding some flax meal. I have often used Flax Seed, since I have heard tell that it is an excellent anti-inflammatory (oh, my achy joints!), but flax meal is something Emily adds to veggie burgers and such. For those of you who are egg-less, a. so sorry and b. you can use flax meal as an egg substitute. It says so on the Bob's Red Mill Package. I dumped a little into a smoothie, and it added a subtle nutty taste, which made me an instant fan.

Overall, the trip was a raving success, validated by the BF (not normally a fan of "trying new things"), who has enjoyed guinea-pigging out (see what I did there?) on a constant stream of new recipes that I've been putting in front of him. Highlights have included a lentil and rice dish (my cupboard has honestly never seen a package of lentils before) and a sweet potato corn chowder recipe that I am looking forward to.

Better 'Burgh Living: Meeting Emily, and Becoming Mindful.

Normally, my personal references in the blog are limited to waxing poetic about my dogs, however the celebration of my 40th year (although a very cool, nice, round number), did give me some anxiety about my bad habits. I started wondering when, exactly, all of this was supposed to catch up to me.

It was triggered by my increased awareness of the comments of friends and strangers on my downright childish eating habits. You know, the ones that go something like, "Wow, if I ate like you I would weigh a million pounds". Well, guess what? The big fat zero at the end of my new age seems to be making an appearance in my figure as well. The things I could get away with up until now (countless cans of sugary soda, dinners of Reeses' Peanut Butter Cups, and an absolute aversion to anything resembling exercise), are starting to produce some alarming results. I realized that I didn't just need to tweak my lifestyle, I needed a complete overhaul.

Thankfully, my encounter with Health Coach Emily Levenson had perfect timing. We both attended a Bricolage Theater event, and from that second I knew I must get her help in turning this bus around.

The first step prior to the initial consultation with Emily, was to put some thought into exactly what I wanted to accomplish at the end of the day. It was easy to generalize what I wanted the outcome to be; more energy, maybe a little weight loss, getting my butt off of the desk chair, but getting specific proved to be a greater challenge than I anticipated, and had a side effect that was, in my world, revolutionary.

"You've discovered Mindfulness!", said Emily, looking at me as if I was the star pupil in class. Really?

Here's how it went down:

To really get into the specifics of my bad habits, I started concentrating on how I interacted with my environment. When did my body want to go to sleep? What food was I really in the mood for? Was I eating this because it was easy, or because my body wanted it? I learned that sometimes I was just thirsty, and probably a little dehydrated for goodness sake, from my lack of water intake. I learned that I thought grape tomatoes were manna from heaven. I learned that I was sadly mistaken in my assumption I was a night person, and that my body loved having a full eight hours. I started to feel and act healthier, just by thinking about being healthier

It wasn't all unicorns and glitter though. My elliptical, a mere steps from the desk I am writing at now, started to take on mythical proportions as a representation of my many failed attempts at getting healthy. Before, I would have demurely walked by it without a second glance. Now, it shouted at me every time I sat down to work. "Lazy, lazy, lazy", it said. Urgh. This was clearly something Emily and I needed to work on. The realization that I polished off a gallon and a half of whole milk solo in one week was, to put it mildly, alarming. Also, the acceptance that Emily's suggestion; my insanely disruptive allergies are likely aggravated by my intense dairy intake, slowly began to gain a reluctant acceptance. Although the thought of quitting dairy entirely would truly push me over the edge, I actually bought a half gallon of almond milk in place of one of the whole milks I would usually buy. I'm not saying I've opened it yet. But it's there, whispering at me from the refrigerator, just audible over the bantering from the elliptical.

But you see, this is what it is all about. We set ourselves up for failure by setting grand, impossible to achieve, goals. I am the master of writing up a plan, and then beating myself up a week later for not sticking to it. Then, inevitably, just giving up since I clearly am a horrible, horrible person for failing in the first place. Now, here was someone telling me it was the small changes. Having a water instead of soda every once in a while, and then, if you still want a soda, HAVE IT. At least you added a healthy option to the mix. I would reach for a handful a fresh grape tomatoes before going for the chocolate. Yes, I still sometimes ate the chocolate, but at least I got in a serving of, gasp, fruit. And sometimes, just sometimes mind you, I didn't even want the chocolate. Revolutionary I tell you.

Emily and I will be working together over the course of the next several months, to bring you a three part series entitled "Better 'Burgh Living". Although there will be a focus in each (Food, Exercise and Mind), getting you healthy is a messy process, so you shall see some overlap from one to the other! I am very much looking forward to the next post, when Emily and I go to the grocery store together! Stay tuned......

It was the first time I have ever attended an event at the awesome little venue, and fell in love immediately with the atmosphere, although it could have been the adorable dog that greeted me at the door. Note: if you ever want me to really love something, throw a dog into the mix, and you are guaranteed rave reviews.....
Seriously, this was such a delightfully wicked, laugh-out-very-loud, celebration of the fact that we still are slaves to our id. In fact, 'Burgh newcomer Johnathan Visser doesn't only strip away most of his clothes, but he also strips away most of his decorum as the climax of his performance includes a primitive caveman monologue on the joys of eating and, well, other primal urges. There is definitely a statement hidden in who comes out on top in this "dinner party gone horribly wrong", although what it is takes a back seat to the en"gross"ing (see what I did there?) performances of Visser, Amy Landis, Tressa Glover, and Michael Fuller. The play warns that it is for mature audiences only, however I should add that vegetarians may want to skip the first few minutes......
Hunter Gatherers is running now through May 7th at the Bricolage Theater, 937 Penn Avenue in the Cultural District. Tickets range from $17-$40, and can be purchased online.

When the press release for this little tidbit landing in my inbox, I did my traditional geeky little happy dance, and promptly purchased my tickets for the opening reception. For those of you who are unaware, I am a big fan of comic and cartoon art, and thusly a HUGE fan and supporter of the ToonSeum. Did you know that the ToonSeum is mere steps away from the above-mentioned Bricolage Theater? Superheroes: Icons and Origins opens on May 5th, and will run through July 31st. According to exhibit co-curator (and the man with the best taste in beer in the 'Burgh) John Mattie, “The exciting thing for the Toonseum regarding Icons and Origins is not only that we get to share our love of the superhero genre, but we get to exhibit some of the most influential artists of the 20^th century. The fact that these characters have not only survived but actually thrived for over 70 years is a testament to the artists and to our collective need for myths."

In past posts, I've given you my personal answer to the question: "Why Pittsburgh?" Dogs and Hockey. Of course, since that post, the list has been growing. This year, the ToonSeum made a pretty strong showing, and now, you can add Opera to the roster.

That's right, Opera.

I've been juggling schedules with my friend Mel (otherwise known as our "Rookie of the Year"), to try and get to the FREE brown Bag Lunch series the Pittsburgh Opera has held throughout the 2010-2011 season. We got it together just in time to catch the last one, this past Saturday, at the Opera's practice facility (I guess it's called the "Rehearsal Hall", but that's the hockey fan in me coming out) in the Strip District. Free concert, lunch from Right By Nature, complimentary 21st Street Coffee, and an excuse to spend a Saturday afternoon in the Strip? How can a girl refuse?

Growing up in a rather artistically inclined family, I've always had a strong appreciation for the Opera, in particular because my vocal range is (to put it mildly), lacking. It's fascinating to me to hear someone who has that talent. On Saturday, I was treated to five such talents, and I'll admit I left transformed into a little bit of an Opera groupie. Robert Downey Jr. himself could have landed in the middle of the concert hall in full Iron Man Regalia, and I would have remained transfixed on the impressive performances of Resident Artists Alexandra Loutsion, Adam Fry, Shannon Kessler Dooley, Stephanie Lauricella, and James Flora.

The Director of Administration and Artistic Operations, William J. Powers, was our host for the event, and kept the mood light, entertaining, and diverse, The selections for the concert ranged from the Bach/Gounod "Ave Maria" (OMG the voice on mezzo soprano Lauricella! I welled up, and the BF left with a little bit of an Opera crush) to selections from the upcoming performance of "Dialogues of the Carmelites" by Poulenc. Bass Adam Fry entertained us with selections from Poulenc's "Le Bestiaire", which are musical vignettes based on medieval texts of animal descriptions. We were reminded that as an Opera singer, you aren't only required to have impressive vocal talents, but acting chops as well. Although in French (eight years and I still could only make out a few phrases), Adam brought to life a Camel, a Tibetan Goat, and a Mouse, among others, and drew the biggest laughs from the crowd that afternoon. Yep, that's right, Opera can be comedic. Who knew? As an interlude, talented pianist Mark Trawka treated us to Poulenc's "Nocturne in ut majeur", a bold, processional that made the perfect centerpiece for the event.

Opera. It's what all of the cool kids are doing. If you want to join us, here are some upcoming events:

As we take a whirlwind tour of Bloomfield (and sport some insanely red lipstick), I talk about two important new websites for Pittsburgh. PGHSNAP is the data set being used as part of PLANPGH, Pittsburgh's first comprehensive master plan for the city, and Kidsburgh, which is a piece of another master plan for making Pittsburgh the greatest place in the world for kids!
Oh yeah, and of course there is also a little talk of the brand new PPM Realty Blog, which is part of my master plan to be the best Social Media Director my company has ever had! Oh, Snap. Pittsburgh Gets a Master Plan

One of the challenges of being a Real Estate Agent in the 'Burgh, is that you need to have the equivalent of a PhD. in "'Burgh Neighborhood Logic". It isn't an easy degree to get. Classes incude: "Shortcuts to Downtown Pittsburgh 101", "Mount Washington vs. your Navigation System", and the always popular "How Many Neighborhoods Fit in One Zip Code". I suppose, at the risk of taking this analogy just a little too far, you could consider 'Burgh Living my thesis.Understanding the 'Burgh and its neighborhood eccentricities is my obsession. So, this weekend, when an attendee of my Sunday open house pointed me in the direction of an "online course" (I know, WAY too far), I have to say I was a little shocked and embarrassed to admit that I hadn't known about it before.
PGHSNAP and PGHGIS are two ways you can wrap your mind around the 90 distinct neighborhoods that make up the city of Pittsburgh. PGHSNAP can be thought of as a "Snapshot" of data for each neighborhood, easily accessible to users through a download from the website. PGHGIS stands for Geographic Information System, and can be launched directly from the site, providing the user with an interactive city map. All of this leads up to PLANPGH; Pittsburgh's first ever Comprehensive Plan.
This evening, I will be attending a presentation/networking event (thank you PUMP!), that will lay out the plan, and discuss and explore these two websites in more detail. The PPM Realty Blog (launching April first), will report back to you on what I learn, and how these two sites can put your "'Burgh Education" on the fast track. (OK, I'll stop).

Now that I have given you some time to digest that little tidbit that was 'Burgh Watching Episode 2, I thought you may like to learn a little more about the creator of Francis Rocks, and the producer of Web series "The Weakness".
Once she was back in her "street clothes", so to speak, I had a chance to chat with Lauren Zito, the person behind those enigmatic Vampires....

Tell me about how the idea developed for "The Weakness"
Interesting story. It started about 3 years ago. I started exploring the world of YouTube videos. I had connected with several people on that site and we started a fun little community of sharing videos. Sort of like blogs only they called them "vlogs". It was sort of (and still is) a YouTube tradition to do a lip sync video. I thought it would be a challenge to do a lip sync video to a song by a German metal band, Rammstein. I chose the song, Stirb nicht vor mir (Don't die before I do) by Rammstein. It is currently still on You Tube with over 150,000 views. It can be viewed here. People really liked the video, thought it was pretty fun. One of my friends on You Tube thought the idea could be developed into a longer story. The idea of a captured, tortured vampire wondering the fate of his human love. I grabbed onto the idea and ran with it.

Tell me a little bit about how the series has developed and your growing following!
We have made many technical and artistic improvements. The original lip sync video was shot with a tiny flip camera and edited on iMovie. We then pruchased a consumer grade video camera, shooting it all in 30 frames a minute. By Episode 3, we upgraded more equipment, shooting in 24 frame a minute but still in SD format. It wasn't until episode 2 of season 3 did we move up to the HD format. We have brought many characters into the fold, some have stayed and some have left, but we have worked hard assembling and getting our troupe a tight little team. We work extensively to try and get the word out there for our series. Because our episodes are longer more tv style lengths. (about 20 minutes), its often hard to keep up with the story. So we maintain a facebook page, a You Tube page and have the episodes available for download on ITunes. Our next goal is local Pittsburgh Marketing. Perhaps a premeir or two this year at local galleries and to get some press through the local alternative publications.

Any spoilers for future episodes?
I can give a few. Look for some big and catastrophic changes to happen with the Bishop's inner circle, especially with Father Michael. Soon, all will be revealed with Quinn's past and his mysterious man that keeps harrassing him, and look for the return of a character thought lost.

What's on your plate for future and current projects with "Francis Rocks"
When not doing the Weakness, we are looking into more Book Trailers. We had a lot of fun doing Box of Lies and hope to do more. We have Mark LaFlammes next trailer currently in pre-production.

Why do you think projects like this work so well in Pittsburgh?
Oh, many reasons. Pittsburgh can look like so many places. Between the neighborhoods changing look from one to the next, and being very close to rural areas without a whole lot of "urban sprawl" that other cities get. One neighborhoold could look like and old European grotto and another can look like bright shiny modern Toronto. So diverse! All this at a much more managable cost. We have been able to mimic many places around the world and various times in history.

"Why Pittsburgh?" for you personally?
I had initially left the city "undefined", but as time went on, I felt like I neede to put this story in a place and let this place be Pittsburgh. Its in the middle of everything geographically and lends its percieved gritty feel to the story. Also, as Zhan said himself, "averages 45 sunny days a year". Not bad for vampires.

Where to Go? What to Do? Get Some Help From Wawadoo!

Scene: A Friday evening in the 'Burgh Living household. She Who Writes 'Burgh Living and her BF are in the family living room.

BF: So, what should we do tonight?
BL: I dunno, what do you feel like doing?
BF: I dunno.

A silence takes over the room. After a few minutes, a "click" is heard as the TV turns on, and the dog sighs happily as she settles in on the couch for the evening.

This is a scene that happens all to often around here. Pretty sad, especially considering I scour my sources in search of new and interesting things for you to do in the 'Burgh. There is a ton going on in the city on any given weekend, but the question isn't "What can I do?", it's "What do I feel like doing?".

Enter Wawadoo. A name I could say over and over and over.

WHO?WADOO

Thanks to Alphalab, self-described as "Pittsburgh's Startup Accelerator", Houstonites (Houstonians? No matter, they're 'Burghers now!) Tim Kern and Chris Allen made the trip to the City of Champions on January 1st of this year. Literally, New Year's Day. "It was a pretty low-key New Year's eve", says Tim. The duo are long-time buds, and both have an impressive resume that belies their youth. Tim majored in Entrepreneurship at the University of Houston, home to the top program in the country, and then launched a career in Freelance Internet Marketing. Chris, a self-taught computer programmer, attended Drexel University with a major in Biomedical Engineering, and became one of the top salespeople at the Daily Court Review.

The combined Programmming, Sales and Marketing skills of Chris and Tim made the perfect recipe for a startup, and the idea for Wawadoo had been brewing for a while. The same scene that I shared above, happened often in the college dormrooms and apartments of both, the difference being they had the skills to create something to solve the problem.

So what is Wawadoo? Tim describes it as "Pandora for events". Like me, Tim and Chris also scour their sources to add as much content as possible. Users can vote "Thumbs up" or "Thumbs Down" and the site will learn their personal preferences, eventually giving customized recommendations for your evening out. Genius!

Right now, the service will be launched in only Pittsburgh and Houston, but the guys have big plans. In addition to their lists of events, they see user-submitted content as a future development as well. We are also likely to see a mobile app down the road. Wawadoo users will be able to choose their preferred method of recommendations, such as a text message or email. One of the benefits they have found working with Alphalab, is that it gives them an opportunity to beta test the site to a small group of people, getting feedback from other startups housed there, before the wider Beta Launch which is anticipated soon.

The Pittsburgh Home and Garden Show - the Expected and the Unexpected

The BF did not want to go to the Home and Garden Show this year. Every other year, we have some need or another that would make a trip to the show worthwhile (an exploding furnace here, an attic full of squirrels there). The idea of going "just for fun", however, definitely did not appeal to him. So, he decided that, to entertain himself, he would count the number of Deck companies camped out on the floor of the Convention center. Let's just say, if you are in need of Deck Building services, get thee to the show. He lost count at around 23.

I decided instead, to find some more "unexpected moments".

Of course, the promise of "There will be dogs", will get me out of the house in an instant. This year, there was an entire row devoted to all things Man's Best Friend. Camp Bow Wow North had a booth, as well as several rescue organizations. There were pet collars, pet treats, pet supplies. My head was spinning. They even had the elusive "I Love my Toy Fox Terrier" and "I Love my Rat Terrier" bumper stickers. I picked up a Peanut Butter Cannoli for the pups.

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe this was the Trib's set-up. It was this Easter Island Head that clinched what the theme of this post was going to be. We were starting to have some fun here. (Dum Dum, want some Gum Gum?)

The BF nixed this (yes, it's called "The Wizzer"), because he didn't think we needed another place in the house for the dogs to pee.....

I may have to go back this week just to pick up one of these to wear the the Pittsburgh Power opener.

Someone at Pittsburgh Magazine has a lot of time on their hands. Spongebob is made entirely of legos!

All I will say here is that the real people at the Duquesne Light set-up were very nice. The patiently listened to us as we explained what a hazard our tree is, and how we really wouldn't care if they drove by and cut it down one day. Really, we wouldn't care....

All in all, this was likely the most fun to be had a a Home and Garden Show! A few other items of note:

The Post Gazette recently announced a PDF edition. I stopped by their booth and signed up for a subscription, as I have heard tell I could download it to my Kindle. Brilliant! Even better, it is $1.00 for the first four weeks, and $2.80 for every four weeks after that.

There were turtle races!

The Rivers Casino cooking show was mesmerizing, While we were there, the chef was giving a demonstration on creating glass-like sculpture out of sugar.

The Pittsburgh Home and Garden Show is running now through Sunday. Hours are 4pm-10pm through Friday, 10am-10pm on Saturday and 10am-6pm on Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults and $4 for children 6-12. Children under 6 are admitted free!

The Pros: I can get a video up for you lickety-split, just by doing something I do remarkably well; talking
The Cons: There is no backspace button to fix the gross mispronunciation of a reporter name (sorry again Leslie), or the fact that I drift off for a moment while concentrating on (God forbid) driving, or the use of the grammatically questionable "most fun", or the lack of lipgloss, or the slip of a finger on the zoom button while setting up the camera, resulting in you being up close and personal with a face desperately in need of some salon attention. Sigh.

We're still new at this people, we promise we'll get the hang of it soon!

Long ago and far away, the ToonSeum hosted a fantabulous party for Bloggers. "M.C"ed by ToonSeum's own Joe Wos, the festivities included a preview of things to come for the museum this year and next. We will discuss all of that excitement in due time, however highlights that perked up my geeky little ears included:

May 2011 - Icons: Superheros and Origins (happy dance!)

2012 - Things that Go Bump In the Night (attn: Walking Dead fans!!!)

The latter was introduced to the crowd by a surprise guest, pictured below. Tell me, can you guess "Who in the 'Burgh" this is? Some generous hints:

- He was the central spook in a late 80's Horror Flick
- I still have nightmares in which he makes a cameo
- He was not entirely bald in the movie, although his choice of head-adornment may not be for everyone
- He's very British, in a cool, "Let's watch some real football" kinda way.

The Sweetest Post - The Pittsburgh Marshmallow Factory

For those of you who gave it the good old college try, it was indeed the Pittsburgh Public Market I was visiting for the last "Where in the 'Burgh" post. I went there with a mission, to try some of the goods from the Pittsburgh Marshmallow Factory that I had been hearing rave reviews about. Since I am known to have a tremendous sweet tooth, and fancy myself to be a foodie, I was excited to try some treats that were born and raised here in the 'Burgh.
I wasn't disappointed.

I never thought I would call a marshmallow "creamy", but these were probably as decadent as you can get for this particular treat. My family was visiting from Erie for the weekend, and I served them up atop of some rich hot chocolate. My choice was the peanut butter marshmallow, and as co-owner Deb told me when I was picking out my flavours of choice, "It will be like drinking a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup". Um, SOLD!

My mom chose the Carmel Cafe, and little sis the Chocolate. The marshmallow is so light, that it actually instantly melted on top of the liquid chocolate, creating a frothy layer of sheer, sugary heaven. I wanted to take a picture for the post of my classy cup of chocolate, however I greedily drank it all up, and then proceeded to eat the remainder of the treats straight up. It was a good weekend.
I emailed Chris, the other owner of the Marshmallow Factory, to get some background on the business, and to see where they are going for the future. Here's what he had to say!:

1. What was the genesis of the idea for starting a Marshmallow business here in Pittsburgh?
I’ve always made marshmallows at home for fun and to take to pot lucks and things like that. People that tried them were always impressed and wanted more or to even buy some. Debbie saw the opportunity there and decided to grab it with both hands. She’s really the driving force behind everything the Pittsburgh Marshmallow Factory does.
We’d looked at a few other places to sell marshmallows, but they all had more minuses than plusses and we were spinning our wheels not going anywhere. That’s when Debbie had the great idea about the Pittsburgh Public Market.
She showed it to me and we talked it over and thought it would be a good opportunity to try to finally do something with this great recipe. The Public Market was just the perfect place at the perfect time. Cost to entry was low; it had a built in audience of foodies and strip goers, and most importantly, other vendors to learn from. We talked it over and decided to jump in and open a booth there.
The way I like to think about the Public Market is that it is an “incubator” for new bootstrap food shops like ours. We knew that we can’t have a whole store of nothing but marshmallows, but combined with other vendors like Tupelo Honey Teas, Blighty English foods, Berry Patch jams, Crested Duck Charcuterie, East End Brewing; it would be a perfect store. It really is the best of Pittsburgh under one roof. With out the Public Market, and the opportunity it presented, there never would have been a Pittsburgh Marshmallow Factory.

2. How do you come up with ideas for your flavors?
We try and have a new flavor every week just to keep things fresh, but the genesis of those flavors usually comes from two sources: Customers and Dares.
Our customers are really the best source of inspiration. Take caramel coffee for example, it wasn’t one of our original marshmallows, but customers kept asking “do you have a coffee flavored one?” or “you know what would be good? Coffee!” so after the 30th or so person said that, we got the hint and went down to the marshmallow lab and made one. It’s still one of best sellers today.
Another of our new “flavors” is vegan, though technically it’s a type rather than a flavor. People have been asking for a vegan marshmallow since literally day one. It’s taken us about five months to develop a good vegan marshmallow but we really didn’t want to let the so many people asking if we could make one down. So we’re happy to say, we now have Vegan marshmallows!
The other big source is more or less “dares.” Take the Big Hop marshmallow. Scott from East End Brewing would stop by just about ever week and harass us about making a beer marshmallow. Eventually, we took him up on it, went to the growler shop and got some big hop and the rest is history!
Same with Tequila and Whiskey flavored marshmallows. We were doing a charity event for Pittsburgh Pride! And they wanted something really different for their event. So I thought, “What’s the last flavor anyone would ever expect in a marshmallow? Tequila!”

3. What has been the response to the product so far here in Pittsburgh?
The response here in Pittsburgh as been simply amazing on both a business and a professional level. People buy A LOT of marshmallows! It’s been a fantastic. The best part of the reaction for me, is that one trait that all Pittsburghers have is that we are all Pittsburgh evangelists. People here in town that try our marshmallows and like them tell EVERYONE. They tell their uncle Pete in Ohio who orders some, or blog about it and a lady in Oregon reads it and gets some. The people of Pittsburgh are the greatest marketing tool ever created.

5. What does the future hold for the business?
Vegan marshmallows are our next big thing in the market. There has been such a demand for them we’re really excited to get them out to the public!
Also, we’ll be launching a new website and marketing campaign shortly. We’re working with a great local firm, Insight Design Studio (http://insightdesignstudio.com/), to make it really reflective of our product and our personalities and most importantly, make it easier to order on line!

6. Why Pittsburgh? Why do you choose to stay and run a business here and do you think you would have been as successful in another city?
Both Debbie and I have lived literally all over the world and to me; there is simply no place like Pittsburgh. The people support local business like no where else I’ve ever been. It’s a point of pride for the city to see local businesses grow and I think the city takes the failure of a local business as a personal insult
Could we have been the Detroit Marshmallow Plant, or the Houston Marshmallow Refinery? Maybe. But we didn’t want to be. We wanted to be here, in Pittsburgh, the best city I know.

Time Management

Ahhhhh, yes. Time management is a skill I have been sadly lacking in the last month or so. My new job has (rightfully) taken up most of my attention, and the personal blog I started over yonder has borne the brunt of the adjustment. Sadly, the personal blog, which was a countdown of the last forty days before I turned 40 years old, stalled at 16 days to go. As I write this post, I am a mere 3 days away (yikes). Shutting 'er down equates to a monkey off my back, but before I let it go gracefully into the night, I wanted to share this one post with you, that was the result of a wonderful collaboration with my stylish friend Terra of Sylish White Female. 21 Days To Go - Fashion Makeover

I would not call myself "unstylish" by any means. I am very fortunate to have a closet chock-full of some pretty great clothes. I am, however, stuck in a fashion rut. Black, grey and any monochromatic variation within the range. I also have a favorite designer, Donna Karan, and although age-appropriate, it is rather easy to allow one's butt to expand invisibly under yards of luxurious black jersey.

For this challenge, I called in the experts. My friend Terra has a fantastic blog, Stylish White Female, which I follow religiously (and so should you). I have always admired her ability to put together the perfect outfit seemingly effortlessly, and her ability to mix patterns and colors is enviable. I sent out an S.O.S and she came running over to dig through my closet and teach me how to wear those clothes I love on the hanger, but have never had the courage to wear or the expertise to create an outfit around. I also have a few events coming up, and needed some new ideas.

She slid open the closet doors and pretty much summed up the whole conundrum by saying, "Hmmmmm, not a whole lot of color....". No kidding. We did manage to dig out a few pieces, and she had an entire outfit set out before I could even turn around. Pure genius. Here is a sampling of what Terra picked out.....

Ghost Healers - They Beat Me Black and Gold

For your Superbowl Sunday viewing pleasure - here is a video from Steelers Songsters Ghost Healers. The song, "They Beat Me Black and Gold", is set in a fictional Pittsburgh International Airport, and is sung from the perspective of an opposing team player coming home battered and bruised after a game.

An item of note, the background that opens the video features a Flower Mural from local artist Bob Ziller, who I interviewed yesterday for a new series coming to 'Burgh Living! Bob is responsible for the "Pittsburgh Beautification Project" (read this article in Pop City Pittsburgh for more information on the project) . The Flowers can be seen on vacant buildings around the city, and are a result of a collaborative effort between Bob and the community.

What to Do? Two Upcoming Events Highlight the 'Burgh's Creative Side

WATCH THE CREATIVE PROCESS

As part of the Art Out of the Box project, Polish Hill, Central North Side, Lawrenceville, Friendship and the South Side will host a temporary installation on their landscape. For one week, artists will set up in an "art box", and the public will be able to observe their creative process first hand. The resulting works will be presented as part of the Gallery Crawl, which is held bi-annually in Downtown Pittsburgh's Cultural District. The project was conceived by Samantha McDonough, a supporter of community-based art initiatives, and has the support of many local organizations including the The Sprout Fund, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, Friendship Development Associates, South Side Local Development Company, Polish Hill Civic Association, Central Northside Neighborhood Council and The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
Local councilman Bill Peduto, has put a call out to artists who would like to participate in the project on his website. Please visit for more information!

EAT, DRINK AND BE FUNNY

ToonSeum Pittsburgh and The Church Brew Works have teamed up to bring you a Valentine's Day Event like no other. In my opinion, Romance and Humor have always gone hand in hand, so The Valentine Couples Drawing Workshop and Beer Tasting is tops on my list of things to do on the big V-Day weekend. Hosted by ToonSeum's Joe Wos, the event, held on Friday, February 11th, is $50 per couple ($45 for members of the ToonSeum), and begins at 6:30pm. Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership's Annual Report: Downtown More Diverse and Dynamic

Each year, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) compiles an annual report, which reflects upon life in the Heart of the City. The report is relevant to commuters and residents alike, since in addition to taking into consideration such factors as the average median age of Downtown residents (25-29 by the way), and average income (one-third can boast incomes of over $100,000), this year's report also revealed that the use of public transit increased from 48% to 53% since 2003, and the average commute is 38 miles.
I know these things because the Post Gazette was kind enough to plop a free edition of the Sunday Extra on my doorstep this weekend. The article, written by Sally Kalson of the PG, appears on the front page.
In the past, weekends often brought desolation as commuters and theater-goers emptied out of the city. The Cultural District keeps things hopping in the evening, but what of the leisurely daytime hours? According to Kalson's article, Mike Edwards, PDP President, says more people are coming Downtown on the weekends to exercise, of all things! He credits local organization Riverlife for their advocacy of riverfront activities.
Things could get exciting on the Real Estate front (three cheers!). Edwards and others have plans to lobby Harrisburg for an Historic Tax Credit; a financing tool which would ease the cost of building Downtown for the developers, and in turn, would help to make Downtown Living more affordable.
The report is good news for the city, as the continued success of our Downtown growth is essential for continued success of Pittsburgh overall.

Over yonder at my new blog, The Last Forty, which chronicles my descent in to old age (ahem), I decided to take a look at the city from a New Perspective. Although my day job and 'Burgh Living require me to take photos, I don't often just step back and take photos of the little moments of the 'Burgh that make it, well, beautiful. You can be in the most mundane spot (like say, grocery shopping), and be awestruck at a small and often passed-by moment, that makes that second of 'Burgh existence kind of special. I wanted to share these little moments with you, and I am going to make it a series, where you, the reader, guess where in the 'Burgh I am that day.

Rookie of the Year: I Resolve To Be a Better 'Burgher

Rookie of the Year: 2011 Resolutions for Pittsburghers

Being new in Pittsburgh, I don’t claim to know everything and everyone in it. But based on my experiences thus far in the city, I have a few suggestions for ‘Burgers to add to their 2011 resolutions:

Go downtown

For reaffirmation, read my first two posts here and here. Stop this nonsense about the city “dying” when a normal workday ends. Sure, it’s not a 24-hour city, but we’re not planning any funerals. Not all businesses shutter their windows at 6pm. Only those who perpetuate that rumor will never experience what downtown has to offer. And for that reason, these businesses NEED you to stick around a little longer. And tell that naysayer otherwise. Also of note: I have found no fewer than five new downtown establishments offering Sunday brunch as well.

Visit a new neighborhood

Piggy-backing on my first resolution, travel to lands unknown – a place that you have: a) not traveled to in the last decade or b) never been. Be a tourist for a day in a different neighborhood and experience its culture, diversity and local fare (nom!). Most everything is new to me in the ‘Burgh, but I always find it shocking the lack of experience some life-long residents have in regards to even the most popular highlights of this city.

Shop local

Make a conscious effort to shop locally owned stores and restaurants and locate neighboring farmers to provide you with the freshest of produce, meat and dairy. Shop at the amazing Public Market (I’m still surprised how many people haven’t at least taken ONE trip here). Adopt “Pittsburgh-centric goods and wares” as your shopping mantra.

Be environmentally friendly – by using it!

Pittsburgh is surrounded by a variety of amazing natural resources. Take advantage by joining activity-oriented groups, such as Venture Outdoors. Make a point to use Kayak Pittsburgh this spring and summer. Join a meet-up group for hiking (yes, even in winter). Bike to work. Jump in the freakin’ Mon River on New Year’s Day. Get. Outside.

Support your local teams.

Yes, we know what color you bleed. And in what nation you live. Sports lovers, I ask you to unite at some of the smaller, non-televised athletic events. There’s a new arena football league. But there’s also a rugby team. A rowing organization. A roller derby league. A women’s football team. And there’s even freaking soccer. Spread a little of that black-and-gold spirit further into the community.

Stop bashing the darn place!

I had the fortunate chance (*extreme eye roll*) to sit near two girls at the license bureau. They both continually ripped on the city for nearly an hour (and gave ridiculous assumptions about “how much better” it is in other metropolitans without having ever stepped a foot in these places). This is not something special to the ‘Burgh, as I got my fair share of this self-deprecating attitude when living in Cleveland.

If you are truly, truly in constant objection with where you live, you CAN relocate. If you HATE the snow, you know there are places in the US where IT DOES NOT DO THIS. Right? I find it so draining to listen to. And incredibly small-minded.

I CHOOSE to live here. I mean, I had an initial reason to move, but I had to make a decision just the same. Do people not understand that you can… leave? If some extenuating circumstance is keeping you here, find something positive to make you a little less miserable. Take into account one (or all!) of my resolutions and maybe you will enjoy Pittsburgh as much as I do.

Kevin Smith: 'Burgh's Biggest Fan

So, I think that Kevin Smith is a fan of the 'Burgh. At least that what his recent stream of Pittsburgh-centric tweets seem to be telling me. Of course, he is a pretty big hockey fan, and the Winter Classic has him all fired up. Dogma (1999) was filmed here in the 'Burgh. I was a lucky-duck and got to meet the director way back then. The book store where I worked opened early so the cast and crew could come in and get coffee (they were shooting in an empty toy warehouse next door). I have a whole other Matt Damon/Ben Affleck story too, but that is for another time....

He returned in 2008 to film "Zack and Miri Make a Porno", and he has never been quiet about his love for the City of Champions.

Downtown Christmas Date Night: Sonoma Grill

I don't really keep my feelings for the 'Burgh a secret. I am lucky to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the country. During the Holidays however, Downtown Pittsburgh is really sumthin' special. So, when the opportunity for not just a "date night", but a "Downtown date night during the holidays" arose, slap a star on my head and call me a Christmas tree, I was all over it.

I like to play it off as if I am a wine connoisseur, but I am not. Left to my own devices with a wine menu, I generally choose a modestly priced red and try to look sophisticated. Fortunately, the pairing of fine wine with (delicious) food is a speciality at Sonoma Grille. We started the evening off with the Pine Ridge Forefront Cabernet. Now, I could try and use some fancy-schmancy wine terminology about the smoothness and undertones and what-not, but I would be completely lying. All I can honestly say is that it was a darn fine glass of wine, and it went tremendously well with the entire meal.....and what a meal!

The last time I was at Sonoma, I recall enjoying the dinner, but leaving a tad bit hungry. Given that we were being treated to a "tasting menu", I anticipated the inevitable late-night trip to the fridge. I was totally wrong. This dinner was the perfect cure for a cold winter's night. We left with cheeks flushed from a vibrant and filling meal, each dish of which was thoughtfully presented and delicious from start to finish.

Our appetizer for the evening was the Mediterranean plate with mixed olives. I dove into the dish of olives first, not just because I find olives to be one of the most perfect foods known to man, but because they were so colorful they almost looked like a little bowl of Christmas Ornaments and were therefore irresistible. The plate consisted of Flageolet Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, and Quinoa Taboule garnished with pomegranate seeds. It is worth a mention here that I was certain I would drive the chef to distraction with all of my food restrictions, however gluten-free was a natural for him. In fact my menu did not need to be adjusted at all, save a few minor items that the BF was happy to enjoy, including what he said to be the "superior" flat bread accompanying the Mediterranean plate. We also were presented with the Pork Sliders, an award winning dish from this year's Downtown Block Party. The Sliders are likely to make an appearance on the menu for Nola, the New Orleans themed restaurant from the Sonoma family opening soon (rumor has it in time for Mardi Gras 2011!) in Market Square.

I was already getting giddy from the wine and was preparing to take the belt down a notch, so to speak, when I was presented with the Cioppino, a traditional Mediterranean Seafood Stew. Sonoma's version featured a tender crab leg chillaxin in the spicy and flavorful broth with his friends the Organic Scottish Salmon, Price Edward Island Mussels and Maryland Shrimp. For whatever (misguided) reason, I usually associate seafood with summer dishes, but this was as close as you can get to perfect winter fare. The BF enjoyed a NY Strip Steak, prepared right "on temperature" (meaning not over-done), along with Fingerling Potatoes and Broccoli Raab.

Are you getting the gist that my idea of a "tasting menu" has flown the coop at this point? And then this??? Really???

Not one, not two, but THREE desserts. The homemade chocolate ice cream was delivered to the table courtesy of waiter Michael, who recommended it as the best dessert in the house. The Creme Brulee was velvety smooth and was served with a apple cider reduction, and the BF downed his Firefly Farms (Maryland) cheesecake so fast I didn't even get a chance to see it, although I did get a taste of the Petite Sirah Reduction and Black Grapes (soaked in said reduction) that it was served with and knew why it disappeared so quickly.

No, there were no late night trips to the fridge this night! After Sonoma rolled us out of their front door we went happily into the night. I will say, before the winter leaves us, the Cioppino and I have some unfinished business.

A Virtual Tour of Epic Proportions: 1612 Buena Vista

One of the first questions people ask me when they find out I am a Real Estate Agent is, "So, have you seen that HGTV show...". I must stop them there. I never watch HGTV. They don't often show the ugly but lovable side of the job. Just once I want to see a bleary eyed agent negotiating a deal at 11pm, or the repercussions of an inspection gone horribly wrong. Instead, you get, "Ta-da! SOLD!".

Ugh.

However, like any agent worth their muster, I still would like my own show on HGTV, so I could be all "Ta-da! Look at me! I sold 20 houses today and my nail polish isn't even chipped". So, the opportunity to film this epic, HGTV style home tour of 1612 Buena Vista has ranked pretty high on my "Best Things I've Ever Done" list. Mostly because this house rocks. It is the star of the show. The War Streets are a pretty cool place to live, and this house is one of the best of the bunch. So, if you can get over the host who is trying her best to mimic an HGTV star (sheesh, blink much?), you will totally want to buy this place.

Then I can be all "Ta-da! I sold a house today in the War Streets and I don't even have a hair out of place!"

It is worth a very serious mention that this masterpiece was shot by Ron Modro and his crew from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Ron would completely be my co-star on my own HGTV show. The reason he and his crew shot this for me (and by crew I mean two cameras, a sound guy, a lighting tech and a partridge in a pear tree), is because the owner of this dazzling home allowed him to use it to shoot a TV pilot. The "Big" Interview: Chef Bill Fuller

As the holidays begin to peek around the corner of fall, the BF gets a hankering. He's gotta have a Gobblerito. Colorful leaves, crisp air, and a flour tortilla wrapped around an entire Thanksgiving dinner just do it for him. So, when I told him I had plans to interview Chef Bill Fuller, the corporate chef for the big Burrito company and Grand Pooba of the Gobblerito, he immediately asked for free samples. I said no.

Thanksgiving dinner irony aside, I was pretty darn excited to have a sit down with the man who is responsible for some of my favorite restaurants in the 'Burgh. The big Burrito Company has, in the last 18 or so years, opened: Nine Mad Mex Restaurants (including ones in Columbus and Philadelphia), Kaya in the Strip, Casbah in Shadyside, Soba and Umi (also in Shadyside), and Eleven in the Strip District. The newest Mad Max is slated to open on South Highland Avenue (little happy dance!) on March 1st of next year. Each concept has its own special place in the big Burrito family, but whether you're enjoying the Conch Fritters at Kaya or the Sweet Potato Tart at Casbah, you get the feeling something special went into your dinner. It could be the carefully crafted atmosphere that the company has put into each restaurant, however, I think it is more likely Chef Fuller's philosophy. Buying local, according to the Chef, is something that we take for granted these days, as most restaurants seem to be traveling that road (or at least touting that they do). big Burrito and Bill have been doing it for years. Listening to him talk about the selection of products that go into creating a menu was almost like hearing an artist describe a canvas. Each piece that goes into a dish is carefully selected, and if local is an option (meaning in season, fresh and available), that is the direction he will go in. Says Bill, "The food tastes better and is fresher. Its keeps the money in our local economy. It reduces the environmental impact of all that shipping from across the country. And the region loves it. We love Pittsburgh, we love Southwestern Pennsylvania. Probably, when it all falls apart, we’ll be just fine because we’ll band together and build walls around the region and protect each other. That’s one of the really appealing things about local food sourcing. It's all of us working together.". You can get the gist of how our very Pittsburgh-centric conversation was going. Yes, we were talking about Armageddon and how Pittsburgh would survive because we would all band together and protect the city. Talk of Giants came into play too, but more on that later.

There was some national attention a few years back during the Superbowl, when the Today Show and NBC network gurus hosted a cook-off during between Chef Bill and a chef from Arizona, whose name I didn't even bother to look up (responsible blogger that I am)! I also only watched the first half of the video because I found it unlikely anyone could beat Fuller's bacon and fried onion loaded burgers. So who won? Well, they didn't really crown a "winner" per se, but Hoda did seem to take a special shine to Bill. Take a look:

At this point in the interview, we got carried away (again) in a conversation only a foodie would love. We talked about where to buy figs in Pittsburgh, how to break (not cut) asparagus, and when peaches are in season. I was in heaven and pretty much ignored the complete fail of my recording equipment. This all happened right before my question FTW, "Why Pittsburgh" for Bill? No worries about the technology glitch, because there was no way I could forget his answer (oh alright, I had to email him to get it exactly right). Hands down, the best I've ever received. "When you look around at the huge iron bridges, the stone railroad trestles with trees growing out of them, the massive mills with massive pieces that are silent now, its like there was a race of giants here that built this city and then left mysteriously. When I’m paddling on the river and I am tooling around inside a half-sunk barge of looking up at giant stone abutments, it's like I’m going down the river in Lord of the Rings." Yep, Giants. Best.Answer.Ever.

Cue scene of BF transformed into a slimy little grey dude, clinging to a Gobblerito and hissing "precioussssss, my preciousssss".

Here are interesting factoids about the man behind the (really awesome) food :
1. He majored in chemistry in college. Hey, so did I! Yeah, the similarity ends with the fact that he was actually good at it, and went to graduate school at Berkeley (one of the best in the country) for his Masters.
2. Everyone has their food weaknesses. Mine are whole milk and bacon. Bill, being a little more gastronomically advanced , has a much more extensive list. "Piles of kielbasa, Mallo Cups, Throwback Mountain Dew, cheap sweet white wine, Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwiches, Pringles, Fritos, Ruffles with French Onion Dip from the store, fries with ranch, all wings, Lebanon bologna." Whew! This sounds like my weekly shopping list.
3. He thinks Hoda is a Hottie. For real.
4. He is on a health kick since turning 40. Running and a healthy lifestyle are tops on his list now. Thank goodness, because we need him to have lots of energy so he can keep churning out those delicious dishes!
5. He is "itching" to start the next big Burrito concept. It has been six years since the opening of Eleven! What are his ideas? Maybe something Italian? I get the feeling something may be just around the corner, but if not, who cares! There are plenty of things I have yet to try at the existing big Burrito Restaurants, such as the Feast Navidad at Mad Mex. This is the Christmas version of the Gobblerito, complete with braised spare-ribs, peas, garlic chili mashed potatoes and baby carrots. It even comes with a side of beef gravy! They better install some couches because Momma's gonna need a nap after that one.
6. His favorite child in the chain is likely Casbah. His first stint as Head Chef was here.
7. He's a really nice guy! I've met my share of chefs who have an ego larger than is warranted, and although Bill jokes about his "Chef Ego", I couldn't even see it if I squinted. He had nothing but fabulous things to say about other restaurants outside the "big" family, including Dinette and Round Corner Cantina, and he spent a full 2 hours chatting with me! He also wants to try my Pierogies.....
Gulp!

Here Comes the Neighborhood! The Otto Milk Condominiums

Jack Benoff is a busy, busy man. Trying to sneak in some time for an interview this past week was a challenge, but Jack has never met a challenge he couldn't conquer. We were successfully able to exchange a quick question and answer session via email, and now he is hunkering down and preparing for a feat that few developers can boast in this climate: 45+ closings on his latest project, The Otto Milk Condominiums.

This isn't Jack's first trip around the development block in the 'Burgh. His first project was the hugely successful 941 Penn Avenue in the Cultural District downtown. Aside from sheer size (941 Penn is an exclusive 17 unit building, whereas Otto boasts 59 units), a new neighborhood and new demographic make the two projects very different. As Jack puts it, Otto presented a new challenge due to "more moving parts" in the large and historic building.

Originally the Phoenix Brewery, Otto's history stretches back to when the Strip District was the main port-of-call for Pittsburgh, with most products, including beer, imported and exported via boat. Unloading and loading on the shores of the river made the Strip a convenient place to set up shop and manufacture many of the goods and services that kept the economy of the city strong. After the Phoenix Brewery closed, the building became the Otto Milk Dairy, which was one of the largest in Pittsburgh. As Jack tells it, he knew the first time he walked through the building that it would make a "great project in a great location".

Great location indeed. My love affair with the Strip District is well known. It seems that every time you blink, something new and exciting is brewing there. The Pittsburgh Public Market, only a few short blocks from Otto, has become wildly successful, and they seem to announce a new participating vendor every week. Right By Nature Market is right across the street, and you can get some of the best, locally brewed joe right around the corner at 21st Street Coffee.

In true ""if you build it they will come" fashion, Jack is bringing the neighbors to the neighborhood. In fact, Kathy Wallace of RE/MAX Select Realty, listing agent for the project, likens the building to a "vertical neighborhood". By February, the Strip will be 50+ households stronger as the new residents close and begin to move in.

What set Jack down the road of developing in Pittsburgh? He is a bit of a renaissance man it turns out. After ten years in medicine, and a stint in software, Jack came to Pittsburgh as an owner of a Max and Erma's franchise. Like so many of us, he fell in love with the city and became convinced it would be a good place to get into the development business. Why Pittsburgh for Jack? "The people", he says. In fact, Jack credits the city itself as one of the reasons his projects have been so successful. An interesting and particularly analytical approach to the business doesn't hurt either. "I enjoy working with people and solving complex problems and situations. Development is just like medicine in that you have the patient and it is your goal to work with them to provide a positive outcome." Speaking from personal experience, I can attest that Jack is a very "buyer-centric" developer. In my day job, I have had the pleasure of working with both Jack and Kathy, and their combined philosophies of honesty, communication and hard work have propelled the project to the success it is seeing today. Of the 59 units, 45 have sold; truly unparalleled. As of this article, three of the remaining 14 are on reservation awaiting signed sales agreements.

So what's next for Jack? "Show me something interesting and I am ready to get going. I would like to do something easy this time such as starting from the ground up."

Oh, The Places You Could Go (With Concert-Oh!)

Today I got an early Christmas present. A shiny new tool to use here on the 'Burgh Living Blog, and one that is sure to increase my Agoraphobic tendencies. Concert-Oh is a Pittsburgh based company that offers a (free!) web-based video conferencing tool. This (free!) service allows users to connect and get some face-time with people across the globe from the comfort of your own living room (or coffee shop, or office). Did I mention it was free?

Aimee Miller and Ben Schmitt joined me this afternoon for a chat about, what else, Concert-Oh and all of its limitless uses. The coolest part? The company is local, and we discussed how Pittsburgh has been a great home-base for their effective, grass-roots marketing campaign. Now 600 members and growing, Concert-Oh is amazingly user-friendly, and participants can call in, or chat over the web. If a web-cam is available, users can chat face to face with others in the meeting. Concert-Oh's motto is "Type less, talk more", although if you are a fan of the instant message, the site offers a sidebar for users to type in their two cents. You can even break out into a private chat with another user, which brings a whole other set of nefarious uses into the equation.

As someone who despises the conference call because of its lack of a personal connection, Concert-Oh will be sure to become one of my new favorite ways to conduct an interview. Even better, since the chats can be recorded, I don't need to take notes and decipher my chicken-scratch later. Future victims be warned. You will now have to at least wear a nice shirt. Fuzzy slippers though, are still optional.

Walkin' the 'Line

Originally part of West Liberty Borough, Brookline is tucked neatly up against the southern edge of Pittsburgh, and many a city employee has found that the convenient balance of suburbs meeting city has made for happy living. Brookline proper was absorbed into the City of Pittsburgh in 1908, and early in its existence was primarily a farming community. An in-depth look at the area's history can be found on the the official community webpage, The Brookline Connection, which is a fantastic resource for anyone considering a relocation to the neighborhood.

Like so many areas that our city now encompasses, the technological advancements of the early 20th century brought significant change to Brookline. In 1905, a trolley line was run from the community into the city, and it remained active until 1966. Of course, the rise of the automobile spurred the most significant change for the residents, with the construction of the Liberty Tunnel. To this day, Brookline remains but a hop, skip and jump from Downtown Pittsburgh, making the area popular with commuters. In fact, Brookline can boast that it is the city's second largest neighborhood!

One of the most popular destinations in Brookline is Brookline Memorial Park, once Anderson Farm, located in the east of the area. According the the Brookline Connection, the Andersons were one of the first pioneering families in the area, and much of their history is detailed here. Their story truly chronicles the transformation of Brookline from a farming community, to a bustling city neighborhood.

Another site of note is the Brookline Monument, a huge cannon (in fact, the memorial is more commonly known as "The Cannon") and War Memorial overlooking the Brookline Business District in Triangle Park. Originally erected in 1930, the monument pays homage to soldiers who have fought in conflicts from World War I to the Gulf War. In 1942, the original cannon was taken away to be used in a scrap metal drive, however was replaced in 1946 and rededicated. In 1990, after the Gulf War, the memorial itself was also replaced.

Very recently (November 15th to be exact), WQED ran a half-hour special on the area entitled "Have You Been to Brookline". Calling the neighborhood Pittsburgh's "best kept secret", and pointing out that most would be "hard-pressed to locate the neighborhood on a map", the special focuses on the people and traditions that make this such a special place.

Serendipitously, and perhaps coming as no surprise, I have a brandy new listing in the area! Forgive the diversion into the day job, but here is a home that truly represents the official motto of Brookline: "Character, Charm, Convenience". Enjoy!

Pimmsburgh

The first time I heard someone ordering a Pimm's Cup was several months back while eating at Point Brugge Cafe in Point Breeze. I was well into my third Pom Fizz, a ridiculously girly and delicious mixture of champagne, Grand Marnier, and Pomegranate Juice, when someone sidled up next to us at the bar, and ordered a Pimm's Cup. "What's a Pimms Cup?" I asked. "Good.", said the sidler, and moseyed off. He wasn't being purposefully elusive, it turns out that Pimm's is a mysterious concoction, the exact recipe of which has remains secret to this day.

A few weeks later, we were settled in to our usual Sunday night routine, which revolves primarily around the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire". On this particular episode, Pimm's (or, to be more exact, the lack of the drink) was a central theme

Then, a stop at the Round Corner Cantina last week, where they serve one fine Pimm's Cup, solidified it. To the store we go - momma wants her some Pimm's!

According the the official Pimm's website, there are several recipes to enjoy. Most of them are Pimm's No. 1 with either ginger ale or lemonade, and garnished with everything from mint and fruit to cucumber. The magical thing about Pimm's is that you can mix it with pretty much anything, and it tastes fabulous. Originally, in the beverage's heyday, there were six varieties of Pimm's to choose from. Over the years, most of these have been phased out, including the rum based (No. 4) and rye whiskey-based (No. 5) options. Pimm's No. 1 remains, which is the Gin based concoction, as well as a seasonal version of the Brandy-based No. 4, called the "Winter Cup".

We are now the proud owners of a (now almost empty) bottle of Pimm's No. 1, which we have been primarily mixing with ginger-ale and garnishing with a cucumber to mimic our Round Corner Cantina favorite. I'm also kinda looking forward to The Pimm's Royal Cup, which is made by mixing the good stuff with champagne and garnishing with a strawberry (yeah, I'm getting all girly on you again)

KA-BLAM! It's a Joe Wos Interview!

As a wee one, I had a bit of a tendency to the overly-dramatic. I'm sure this made for both entertaining (hours of full-on conversations with imaginary playmates) and frustrating (wild temper tantrums in the middle of department stores) moments for my parents, who wisely guided me down the path of "not taking myself too seriously". As a result, I have a particularly well-developed inner child. I laugh a lot, and I laugh loudly (so I've heard). But, I like laughing. Humor is something I seek out, in situations and in people. So, when I was offered the chance to interview Joe Wos, Founder and Executive Director of the ToonSeum here in the 'Burgh, I was all "Andele, Andele, Arriba, Arriba!". Let's go!

Where did it all Begin?'

One of Pittsburgh's 40 under 40, Joe is a born and bred 'Burgher; from Braddock, PA to be exact. His dad worked in a Steel Mill in the 70's, and for reasons we are all very well aware of, spent a lot of time at home. As a result, he got to focus on a much more important job, cultivating Joe's creativity. They would spend hours simply playing together, creating elaborate stories with figures, and acting them out. Intentionally or not, his father became his biggest influence as a story-teller, and the idea of ToonSeum began to sprout roots at a very early age.
After a brief stint at Carlow College (where, he jokes "I obtained my MRS."), Joe began his career as a cartoonist for the Children's Museum here in Pittsburgh. A storyteller extraordinaire, he illustrated stories as he told them, often on the fly! Many of Joe's stories are original, and he likened the process to improvisational Jazz (hey look - my dad is suddenly paying attention!).
He was such a great success that he went on the road, to venues that included the New Orleans Jazz Festival! Yep, Cartoons and Jazz seem go hand in hand.

A ToonSeum is Born

All of this got Joe to thinking, and when a creative mind gets a-thinking, great things usually come to pass. What better place than his hometown to create a home-base for all things comic and cartoon art-related? According to Joe, staying in the 'Burgh was a no-brainer. Firstly, he was determined. "There is something to be said about proving that it can be done". He also speaks to the tremendous amount of talent in Pittsburgh. "Pittsburgh IS pop art", says Joe, and he points to the fact that there are over 50 working comic book artists and cartoonists here in the 'Burgh. Finally, he credits the amount of support that talent receives through the likes of the Grable Foundation, the Sprout Fund, Heinz Endowments and the Pittsburgh Foundation, to name just a few. In perhaps the most poignant moment of our interview, Joe commented, "You can accomplish your vision here; Children see that Pittsburgh is one of those places where you can make a dream a reality".
So, three years ago, Joe officially opened the doors of the ToonSeum inside the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh. Kicking things off was "From Illustration to Animation", featuring the art of Alice in Wonderland and Charlotte's Web. The basis of the first exhibits were actually pieces from Joe's personal collection, however, the talent in Pittsburgh quickly caught on to the attraction, and the ToonSeum's collection began to grow exponentially. Just last year, after an epiphany that adults seemed to be just as interested, if not more so, in cartoon and comic art, he moved the museum to it's newest and most appropriate location on Liberty Avenue, in the middle of the Cultural District. While children may enjoy the visual entertainment, adults, Joe explains "understand that the characters are also an art form". The museum now boasts a collection of over 3000 pieces, 50-100 of which are displayed at any given time. 30-40 of those are generally from the museums permanent collection, along with additional pieces appropriate for the current exhibit.

KA-BLAM!

So many things to celebrate! KA-BLAM!, Toonseum's third annual fundraiser is coming up this Saturday, November 6th, and of course Joe will be on hand to get the party started, as well as the guest of honor, Carroll Spinney! Carroll is best known as the man behind Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird on Sesame Street, but he is also a very talented artist, cartoonist and illustrator. Attendees of the VIP reception will be treated to a conversation with Carroll, as well as a signed print and ToonSeum membership. Then, the main event will kick off and milling about the crowd will be Jim Martin, who is the one and only Gary Gnu! Who "gnu" he was from the 'Burgh? (Sorry, couldn't resist that one.) The event would not be complete without a "Speedy Delivery"! David Newell, better known as Mr. McFeely from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, will make an appearance as well. The event also celebrates the third anniversary of Toonseum, and kicks off their latest exhibit, "The Art Of Carroll Spinney"; a retrospective of the artist, reaching back all the way to his early childhood drawings and car designs (turns out Carroll was a mini-gearhead, I love him already!), to his air-force comic strip, and his life on Sesame Street. The exhibit will officially open to the public on November 6th, and will run through January 30th. If you want to see just how much love there is out there for Mr. Spinney, check out this video, where Joe lets a very special guest know that she will have the opportunity to meet her hero live and in person!

If you still have any doubt that KA-BLAM! is the place to be on Saturday, then you are a robot. Here are a few factoids to wrap your mechanical brain around:
1. You can wear your jammies. For real. Although, I think I just might wear this instead.
2. There will be a cereal bar. (Do I still save all of the marshmallows for the end? You have to be there to find out!)

A completely "toon-tastic" silent auction, with prizes including a trip to San Fran (complete with airfare, hotel stay, and fun museum tours), an instant art collection of 12 limited edition prints courtesy of ToonSeum (you'll be bidding against me for this one), a trip to Orlando (including hotel stay, park-hopper passes, and passes to Universal Studios Orlando Resort), many rare collectibles, and much, much more!
6. Did I mention Mr. McFeely will be there?

8. City Council has declared November 6th "ToonSeum Day", so I think that means you are required to be there, or Bill Peduto will come and find you.
9. More silent auction awesomeness, much of which will revolve around beer (courtesy of our own East End Brewing). I therefore amend my above statement to: "Cartoons, Jazz and Beer go hand in hand" (um, in hand).

Our Rookie of the Year Answers the Big Questions

Excuses, Excuses. I'm full of 'em; Wah - my sister just got married (and looked gorgeous by the way), Wah - my day job is off the hook (which I'm not going to complain about really), and Wah - I'm crazy with this whole complete awesomeness that is KA-BLAM!, the Toonseum fundraiser (tickets people, tickets).
Fortunately for me (because it is my blog after all, and therefore, all about me), we have an incredible guest-blogger working diligently on producing quite an impressive series for us, which means you need wait no longer for a post. Here are Mel's answers to the Big Questions about the 'Burgh!

Rookie of the Year: The Big Question

A few weeks ago, I was asked, “How?” during a casual meet-and-greet conversation, aimed at my response to, “Where do you live?”

For such a simple question, the answer is not all that complex either, but because of pre-conceived notions, I have to explain my situation more so than if I, say, lived in the South Side. I have a place to live, as most people do. When I delve in to what would prompt such a question, it is a universal viewpoint that living downtown is somehow impossible.

I’m not saying that you don’t have to adjust when you move from the suburbs to a downtown neighborhood – because you do – but you get used to certain inconveniences (for lack of a better word) that soon become habit.

Here are the some of the frequently discussed topics that are seemingly foreign in relativity to my residence in an urban environment:

Grocery Shopping Without fail, I am always questioned about where to shop. It is to be assumed that since there is not a Giant Eagle or likewise big box store in the middle of the city, that I will starve to death. I do not find grocery shopping to be any more of an inconvenience than, well, grocery shopping. Frankly, I hate it, but I have to go every week. But just like those who live outside the city, I get into my car, drive to the store – usually the Strip District since we are conscious about buying local – pack up my car, and unload everything into the elevators. The only real inconvenience is that my parking garage is three blocks away, so we pull up, dump off in the lobby, park, then I walk back. Without even climbing a single stair! Now, if I need something in the middle of the week, I walk down to the strip (if it’s a package light enough to carry for some 15 blocks) or stop into the downtown CVS. Oh, and there is a rumor on the street that a small market WILL be opening downtown next year. Myth: busted.

Parking As I mentioned with grocery shopping, my parking situation is a bit inconvenient. But since I have two healthy feet, I’m not so lazy that I can’t walk to my car, when needed. Sure, the garage is not attached to our building, and I quickly became used to that in Cleveland, but, it’s covered for inclement weathers, and I have around the clock security. As far as having a communal shared property for parking: that’s why I have insurance. People will ding your car. People will touch your car. People with bad intentions might even steal your car – but as far as I’m concerned, this can happen anywhere. I have heard complaints about visitors having “no place to park” or parking being too expensive when coming downtown. Again, with growing metropolitans, this is definitely an issue, but you are experiencing a GOOD side effect of a city on an incline. And if parking is a serious hassle, then I recommend adjusting to public transportation – the T is a fantastic method to get from one section of downtown to another. In preventing tows and violations, it is as simple as paying attention to signs and parking accordingly. On a side note, living in Pittsburgh, you could totally go car-free.

Safety Living in the city, awareness is key. In Pittsburgh, I have never felt threatened or unsafe walking around downtown. The city has life now – it’s not some desolate ghost town where crime runs rampant without nary a police presence. I am not naïve to realize that bad things can and could happen in downtown, but just as with the outer ring neighborhoods, always be aware of your surroundings, keep to the brightly-lit main roads, and don’t walk by yourself in weird alleys. It’s City Living 101.

Entertainment My favorite myth to dispel, as there are plenty of things to do/see/eat/drink down here – especially in the Cultural District and Market Square! Downtown has a certain universal vibrancy that I felt Cleveland was lacking, and it doesn’t “die” at 5pm, much like people think.
